The Grassi Museum is home to Germany’s largest collection of musical instruments. The story began in 1886 when a Dutch music publisher, Paul de Wit, opened a museum at 16, Thomaskirchhof, to house his collection of historical musical instruments. The visitors to de Wit’s museum not only saw the instruments on display but also heard them being played. The present exhibition - The search for the perfect sound - offers an insight into the varied world of musical instruments and their performance practices. The exhibition traces the history and technical development of these instruments from the Renaissance to the present. The tour is not only pleasing to the eye but also to the ear, as visitors are invited to create their own ‘perfect sound’ on replicas of the museum’s exhibits.

Jewish Life in Leipzig - the past to the present

Leipzig once had a large Jewish community. Around 18,000 of its inhabitants shared this faith. They played a part in the economic and cultural life of the city. Their influence encompassed Brühl, home to the fur trade, to the activities of the suffragette, Henriette Goldschmidt. The commemorative plaques that lie embedded in the pavements before some Leipzig houses relate their fate. From 1933 Jews were marginalised, persecuted and murdered. These crimes were also committed in Leipzig: thousands of the city's Jewish population were killed. This tour combines the history of Leipzig with that of its Jewish populace.
